Railway Quay, Newhaven
These grade 11 listed buildings were once boat building warehouses on the River Ouse in Newhaven. The area around these was to be developed into residential houses and apartments. As part of this regeneration we produced a scheme to remodel the listed buildings to house a hotel on upper floors and a community space on the ground floor, consisting of restaurants, bars and a gym for use by the local residents.
The history of the buildings would remain visible by leaving in place the existing gantry and cranes, whilst creating very contemporary insertions to the space by way of brightly coloured ‘pods’ which would house the kitchens and bars. An atrium would be built around the central gantry, circulation walkways would slice through the space and a glazed roof over the rooftop restaurant would allow light to flood the whole space.
